Weymouth Olympic Test Race Notice Is Published

Posted on : 09/12/2010

In these cold and chilly winter months, it is difficult to think about sailing so it is good to remind yourself that we have a very special event in the not too distant future.

Having waited for a very long time for this country to host a major sporting event, we are of course going to be hosting the Olympic Sailing Regatta and in this regard, the Notice of Race for the forthcoming Test Event has recently been published. So in reality, not too different to the notices of race events as published by your local club. This test race is the 'Weymouth and Portland International Regatta' and is scheduled to take place between the 31st July to 13th August 2011. The event will be based at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and Portland Marina.

The main regatta is scheduled to take place from the 29th July to the 11th August 2012 with 380 athletes competing in 10 events. So this test event will serve as a good basis for checking on all aspects of organisation with the main event in mind.

The test event race notice gives details as to entry requirements including rules/regs, entry guidelines, venue, courses and scoring. All good stuff.

The actual Olympic event will follow a very well trodden path although women's match racing will be introduced for the first time. The event organisers hope to acknowledge the interest that match racing generates and set the courses close to the north shore when possible.
