Medal Race Results In The Star & Finn Class
Posted on : 05/08/2012
Ben Ainslie became the Olympic Sailing Events most successful competitor in Weymouth this afternoon after some decisive racing in the Finn Class. The weeks events were dominated by the Jonas Hogh-Chrfrom Denmark who had beaten Ainslie in seven out of the ten opening races but trailing by two points meant that it was all to play for in the medal race. The position of Pieter-Jan Postma from the Netherlands was close enough to prevent Ainslie from concentrating solely on the Dane so in the end Ben Ainslie had to race the fleet.
It was touch and go at times with the usual heart stopping moments as these athletes endeavoured to out smart and out muscle each other.
In the end, Ben Ainslie finished ninth but most significantly ahead of the Dane and with other potential winners out of position. It wasenough and the medal was won.
This puts Ben Ainslie in a most distinct hall of fame.
On the contrary to Ainslie's Finn Class success, the Star Class sailors from the GBR team were pipped to the Gold Medal despite consistent form that had suggested that they would be overall winners. It just goes to show how close these races can be and that in may instances, medals are open and up for grabs until the very end.
Coming into the final with a good lead, the British Team had to finish in fourth place or better to gain the gold medal. Competitive racing saw them in sixth place on the last leg which sadly dropped to eigth at the finish.
